When you hear the words “down syndrome” what comes to mind? Most of us have interacted with a person who has Down syndrome, either in passing or, if you’re like me, when you tuck your daug hter into bed each night and plant a kiss squarely on her forehead.
You can imagine then why the coffee table-esque book, Common Threads [$22], published by Band of Angels Press, caught my eye. Featuring pages of heartwarming photographs from Kendra Dew, this book is a cover to cover celebration of the lives of people with Down syndrome. Stories of unlikely friendships, immeasurable hope, and incredible accomplishments abound. If you were to thumb through this book, as I did at first, you’d surely be captivated by the angelic faces and joyous grins staring back at you. Once you dig a bit deeper, your heart will be lifted by the personal accounts of amazing strides that those featured in the book have made in their own lives, and just how much of an impact they’ve had on those around them.
In addition to Common Threads, Band of Angels features a vast array of other products, all intended to increase awareness and spread a positive message about the most commonly occurring chromosomal genetic disorder in the world. Greeting cards, calendars, and even jewelry are all available and make a touching gift for anyone who already has been, or who is yet to be touched by someone with Down syndrome.
