World Breastfeeding Week kicks off today with the goal of supporting and educating women worldwide on the importance of breastfeeding. This year's focus is the power of one- emphasizing the importance of nursing in a baby's first hour. The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action says, "Initiation of breastfeeding withing the first hour of birth is the first and most vital step towards reducing infant and under-five mortality, by reducing the overwhelmingly high neonatal mortality rate."
In celebration there are walks and events throughout the country and worldwide. If you're currently a nursing mama you can take part in Synchronized Breastfeeding Worldwide (sounds like an Olympic sport doesn't it?!) Just latch on your little one on at 10:00am (your local time) on August, 8. And while we think you should always be kind to a nursing mama, this week when you see a woman struggling to push a shopping cart and balance her suckling babe, an extra smile might be in order.
Breastfeeding Mama's, we salute you.
